"Not to us, Lord, not to us but to your name be the glory, because of your steadfast love and faithfulness.â Psalm 115:1
Most Christians are familiar with "Soli Deo Gloria", which means Glory to God alone in Latin. Here in Psalm 115, the people of Israel are reminding themselves that God gets all the glory because of His steadfast love and faithfulness. The psalm goes on to contrast the one true God to other nationâs gods. It is a great reminder of who the Lord is and how faithful He is to unfaithful people. Reading this psalm lifts your eyes to marvel at God instead of focusing on yourself.
Like the Israelites, we are unfaithful despite how hard we try. We are sinners. And yet, it is the Lordâs faithfulness that abounds. He holds us fast. âYour steadfast love, O Lord, extends to the heavens, your faithfulness to the cloudsâ (Psalm 36:5). In other words, both Godâs love and faithfulness is unending.
Chris Tomlinâs song, âO Lord, Youâre Beautiful," has these lyrics: âHelp me to never seek a crown for my reward is giving glory to You.â Isnât true that we often find ourselves wanting the glory? May we think rightly and be like the Israelites in Psalm 115, âNot us, Lord, not to us but Your name be the glory.â May we live out Soli Deo Gloria!
